Blow for Internet gambling as anti-gaming legislation approved
The House Judiciary Committee dealt a blow to the online gaming industry today when it approved legislation aimed at banning Internet gambling in the US.
Despite recent overtures from established land based Las Vegas casino operators to legislate and regulate online gambling the committee voted 25-11 in favour of the bill.
The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act (H.R. 4777) now moves to the House of Representatives for further deliberation. Meanwhile the House Judiciary Committee will vote on another piece of legislation entitled the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
Together the two pieces of legislation, if passed, would ban Americans from gambling online. The first essentially makes it illegal, while the second introduces measures to enforce its illegality.
Worryingly for the gambling industry the bill is expected to pass in the full house, in part due to a strong desire on the part of Republicans to expunge the smear left by Jack Abramoff’s recent corruption scandal. It is however, expected to run into difficulty in the Senate.
