Jeff Sharpe wins The Dublin Poker Showdown
It was the second leg of the Showdown Poker Tour last weekend in Dublin and organisers were hoping it would not be another case of the No-Show Poker Tour, as was experienced in London for the tour’s inaugural event.
Just 23 players turned up for the first Showdown Poker Tour event, held in London’s world famous Gutshot Poker Club, and organisers were hoping Dublin’s event would attract a bigger crowd.
Unfortunately the big field they hoped for never materialised, with just 21 players forking out the €5000 buy-in this time round. Still, just like at the Gutshot, the field might have been short a few bodies but it was not short of talent, with a higher percentage of star players than almost any other poker tournament in memory.
Spread across just three tables was the full-strength Hendon Mob, Roy ‘the boy’ Brindley, Ben Grundy aka ‘The Milky Bar Kid’, Andy Black (who finished 5th in the 2005 WSOP) and many more.
Despite the small field the tournament lasted three days, with nine players knocked out on day one, including Ross Boatman and his brother Barny, who was the first mobster to be knocked out.
Twelve players started day two, with the top three positions occupied by a Swede and two Danes – no surprise in this Scandinavian dominated poker era. Ben Grundy was the first to go and by the end of the day just four remained with no mobster remaining to fight it out for the victory (Joe Beevers finshed 7th, while Ram Vaswani ended in 5th).
Day three began with four players fighting for three paying places, however it is reported that a deal was made, with €10,000 skimmed off the prize pool to take the edge off the fourth place bubble. It looked a sure thing that Jeff Sharpe would be that man, but his short stack was given a tremendous boost when he tripled up in a big pot that also spelt the end for Andy Black. He collected the €10K consolation prize, though that might seem rather insignificant to a man who collected $1.75 million in last years WSOP.
The triple up proved conclusive for Jeff Sharpe as he eventually overcame Niklas Olman (in 3rd) and Ola Brandborn (in 2nd) to win the title and the first prize of €45,000 or thereabouts (depending on how much exactly was cut out for 4th place).
Round three of the Showdown Poker Tour take place at the Casino Barriere de Trouville. Rather bizarrely it is scheduled for 6th-10th August, which coincidentally is also the final week of the WSOP. Not too clever.
