Christian Grundtvig celebrates $900,000 WPT Victory
A much maligned WPT Grand Pris de Paris came to an end last weekend, with at least one man showing no signs of discontent.
Christian Grundtvig triumphed over a field of 232 to win one of the biggest payouts in European history, collecting €712,500 ($894,965). He beat Jani Sointula after a classic 30-hand heads-up battle, finally putting the battle to bed when his pocket sixes held up against Sointula’s Ah-5d. Sointula received €356,250 ($447,508) for second.
The final table had started in the absence of any big name players, with the last real household names eliminated on day four of the event. Phil Hellmuth, the biggest draw of all, found himself shortstacked with 16 runners left and moved in with A-T. He looked good when he was called by just one opponent, holding Ad-6d, but he fell foul of a diamond flush, and was left ruing a missed opportunity (he started day four fifth in chips).
Christer Johansson, a previous winner of this event, did a little better than Hellmuth, but was knocked out in 13th place when his move to steal the blinds ran into a K-Q in the big blind. Johansson’s 5-2 stood little chance, and his attempt to regain his title was vanquished.
A good tournament of poker was sadly marred by criticism from many players, including former WPT winner John Gale, who said the conditions of play were terrible. He cited a lack of air conditioning in blistering heat, cramped tables and playing ten-handed when there were just 60 runners left as the main problems.
The Aviation Club de Paris will need to work on these points if they are to continue to have a successful tournament.
