2006 World Series of Poker update
It is now Friday, Day four of the 2006 WSOP and already we have seen record tumbling at every turn.
The 2006 WSOP kicked off with the $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Texas Hold’em event. There were no surprises that the 1100 strong field was a record for the WSOP, as experts are predicting every single event will be a record breaker in terms of entrants and prize money.
Despite this new record, the public’s attention was understandably turned towards the 2006 WSOP Tournament of Champions, featuring a highly exclusive field of 27. That included the final table from last years TOC, the 12 winners of this year’s WSOP Circuit events, and a few sponsor exemptions.
A final three of 2005 TOC winner Mike “the Mouth” Matusow, 2004 Player of the Year Daniel Negreanu and WPT Host Mike Sexton presented the watching world with as fine a display of poker as has ever been witnessed, with Sexton and Negreanu battling it out for over 300 hands heads-up, before Sexton finally triumphed. The man nicknamed “The Poker Ambassador” immediately showed where he gets his reputation from; donating half his $1 million win to charity.
The first open event of the 2006 WSOP also kicked off on Day One. Officially Event #2, the $1500 NL Hold’em tournament drew the second largest poker filed in history, filing more tables than any other poker event, bar the 2005 WSOP main-event.
That event proved a maniacal rollercoaster, with over 1600 players busting out on that day alone! With a do-or-die attitude pervading the field just 121 runners made it to Day Two of the event, and by Day Three we were down to the nine final table finishers. Brandon Cantu was the eventual victor, collecting over $750,000 for his troubles.
Three other events have kicked off since then. The $1500 Pot-Limit Hold’em event is scheduled to finish today, while the three-day $1500 Limit Hold’em event began yesterday, and the three-day short-handed $2500 No-Limit Hold’em event kicks off today.
Watch this space to keep completely up-to-date with all the action at the 2006 WSOP.
