WSOP Update: Boyd rises from the ashes to claim WSOP bracelet. Furst and Abolfathi win their first bracelets.
The WSOP record-breaking bandwagon continues to roll on, with every event drawing huge fields and massive crowds.
Three new WSOP champions have been crowned since the last update here, with three incredible tales.
Event #3, the $1500 Pot Limit Hold’em tournament, featured one of the most exciting WSOP final tables in memory. Bad beats were the order of the day, with some incredible draws hitting to give players a number of miraculous wins. Eventual winner Rafe Furst, a first time bracelet winner, was the beneficiary of one suck miracle draw earlier in the day, when all-in with A-A against his opponent’s 7-2 on a board of 7-7-3. Only an ace could save him, and he hit the miracle two-outer on the river to propel him into the chip lead. He never looked back, and collected the $345,984 1st place prize a few hours later.
The following day Event #4 concluded, with WSOP newcomer Kianoush Abolfathi collecting a bracelet on his first appearance at the championship. Even more amazingly, Abolfathi had started the day second from last in chips, with just $75K to the chip leader’s $259K. He collected $335,289 for fist place.
Event #5, the $2500 short-handed Texas Hold’em tournament, played out yesterday in front of a vast, vast crowd. Why? Well the presence of 2005 WSOP main-event champion Joe Hachem might have had something to do with it! Also, alongside him, and starting with the chip lead, was the controversial Dutch Boyd, hoping to resurrect his career with an historic WSOP victory.
As it turned out he was able to do just that, recovering from a crippling blow after he lost two all-ins in a row, and demonstrating tremendous poker skills to take the title after a short heads-up battle with a shorter stacked Joe Hachem.
Today will see the conclusion of Event #6, the $2000 NL Hold’em event, the second day of Event #7, the $3000 Limit Hold’em event, and the start of Event #8, the $2000 Omaha Hi/Lo event.
