WSOP Update: Fourth bracelet for Allen Cunnigham
Event #14, the $1000 with-rebuys NL Hold’em tournament, is one of the most exciting events at the World Series of Poker. A chance for the pros to show what a rebuy really means, players often spend more money in buy-ins for this event than they do for the $10,000 Championship event!

Two years ago Daniel Negreanu bought in to this event 27 times. Last year Darrell Dicken set a new record with 28 rebuys (that’s $29,000 total!) This year would be no different.

Negreanu brought 30 yellow $1000 to the table with him this time, prepared to set a new record in the event. In the end he declined to spend the lot, and instead the buck for eye catching rebuys passed to Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi.

Mizrachi, with 11 or so rebuys, was well off the record pace set by Negreanu and Dicken, but it was the manner of his rebuys that captured the imagination. Mizrachi started the event by going all-in blind. He lost. The next hand he went all-in blind again. He lost again. This went on until Mizrachi had bought in six times, and gone all-in six times, and lost six times, without ever seeing his cards until they were turned face up on the table!

Amazingly the winner of this event only made one rebuy. Allen Cunningham, four times a bracelet winner here at the WSOP, is the sort of conservative player you would not expect to prosper in a chaotic event such as this. His victory proved that good timing is as important (if not more important) than deep pockets.

And as if winning his fourth bracelet was not impressive enough Cunnigham won the event after coming back from a 3:1 chip defecit against David Cheem. The first prize was $625,830.
