WSOP Update: Clare Miller wins Seniors NL Hold’em while Betchel leads HORSE field with 18 left
The $1000 NL Hold’em Seniors (over-50’s) tournament drew to a close today, with Clare Miller wrapping up an impressive performance with an easy victory. Meanwhile the $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E event provided the excitement, and more, everyone had been hoping for.

1184 over-50’s set a new record for the $1000 NL Hold’em event when the sat at the felt for the start of Event #19 on Thursday and though short of big names, the tournament proved full of quality poker.

No more so than that displayed by Clare Miller, who powered her way through the field to win her first WSOP bracelet. Miller got the boost she needed when she eliminated the second biggest chip stack early on Day Two. Salah Levy had pushed all-in with A-Q, but Miller had pocket rockets and the aces stood up to win a massive pot.

Not long afterwards Miller secured her position by eliminating Doug Schuller and winning another vast pot. Miller, with AK, had raised $20,000 preflop only for Schuller to re-raise a further $50k. Miller then re-raised another $50k before Schuller pushed all-in for $336,000. Miller called, creating a pot in excess of $700,000 and when the cards were on their backs it proved to be a classic race: Miller’s A-K versus Schuller’s Q-Q. Unfortunately for Schuller the first card out was an ace, and he never recovered.

Miller then powered on to win the event, using her massive chip lead to dominate the table. Heads-up against Mike Nargi lasted just five hands, with Miller winning every one. She collected $247,814 for the win.

The H.O.R.S.E event is the most eagerly anticipated event outside of the championship event. With the $50,000 buy-in five times the size of the buy-in for the main-event, and the mix of five different poker games (Hold’em, Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, Stud, and Stud Hi/Lo – Eight or better) the field proved to be a who’s who of poker.

The cream rose to the top of a very good field, and with 18 left players of note still in the mix included Gavin Smith (2005 Player of the Year), David Singer, Patrik Antonius, Chip Reese, Andy Bloch, T.J. Cloutier, David Levi, Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Phil Ivey, Allen Cunnigham, and Dewy Tomko.

At the time of writing it is currently 5am and the remaining 18 players are on a break. Jim Betchel, with $990,000 currently leads the way, and has done for some time. In second is David Singer ($743k), with Gavin Smith ($650k), lying in third, just ahead of Chip Reese, T.J. Cloutier, Barry Greenstein, David Levi, and Doyle Brunson in that order. Allen Cunningham is bringing up the rear, shortstacked with $90,000.

Unless play is stopped because players demand a break for sleep, this tournament will continue way past sunrise until a final table is determined.

Keep watching this space for all the action (almost) as it happens!
