WSOP Update: Hellmuth misses out on tenth bracelet. Again.
There is something about the last four WSOP tournaments that has had the feel of a H.O.R.S.E hangover. Take nothing away from those who have won, their victories have all been impressive, but it feels like something’s missing since the end of the star-studded H.O.R.S.E tournament.

Enter Phil Hellmuth. If you didn’t already know that “The Poker Brat” is on the warpath to a record equalling tenth WSOP bracelet, then believe me, you’ll know it as soon as you get within shouting distance. The room veritably echoes with the sounds of his self-promotion. Forget H.O.R.S.E; the showman is back in town.

Event #24, the $3000 Omaha Hi/Lo tournament, proved to be his latest chance. It was not his first however. Hellmuth has already blown what will probably prove to be his best chance by finishing second to Jeff Cabanillas in the $5000 NL Hold’em event.

Still, here he was, second in chips at yet another WSOP final table. The only trouble was that this was Omaha, an event in which Hellmuth’s reputation in not exactly formidable. In fact Hellmuth has never won a WSOP event in anything other than Texas Hold’em. Perhaps this was his chance?

Sadly not. Hellmuth got off to a stinker, losing over half his chips inside the first 45 minutes. He managed to hang around to see the backs of Alex Limjoco, Steve Ladowsky and Peter “the Poet” Costa, but eventually lost out to Brent Carter and was heading for the rail in sixth place.

That allowed the rest of the table to have their say, but really there was only one player in this tournament. Scott Clements started the day as chip leader and powered mercilessly through the final table. By the time there were three players left Clements had $875,000 to Thor Hansen’s $100,000 and Brent Carter’s $75,000.

With two left his lead was even greater, and it was a question of ten minutes or twenty as to when the final elimination would occur – Thor Hansen had that little chance.

Ten, it turned out, was the accurate prediction. With Td-9s-6s-5s Clements got it all-in against Hansen who held Jd-5d-4h-2h. The board came 8s-4c-2s-7s-3d giving Clements a flush for the high pot and 2-3-4-5-6 for the low. With that he won $301,175 and his first WSOP bracelet. Hansen picked up $155,443 for second.
