WSOP Update: Event #23 Limit Hold’em
The past few events have suffered a little from the fallout of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E tournament. Perhaps it was inevitable that they might seem a little insignificant in comparison, and that the big stars, exhausted from the marathon Day Two of that event, might stay clear.
So it seemed for the $3000 Limit Hold’em tournament. Now limit Hold’em has never attracted quite the same glitz and glamour of No-Limit, and the $3000 buy-in - too much for newbies, too little for the real big time players - drew a crowd of mostly seasoned, yet unknown pros.
The final table was representative of this, with not a single big name player on view. Ian Johns, a feared Internet pro, was leading the other eight players who outlasted a field of 341 to make the final table.
Ultimately it came down to a fight between Ian Johns and Jerrod Ankenman. Johns started heads-up horribly shortstacked, but mounted a valiant comeback.
In the midst of all this the 2004 WSOP champion Greg Raymer showed up, there to support his friend Jerrod Ankenman. Bizarrely, given his allegiance to Ankenman, he was given the microphone and ended up taking over announcing duties.
Whether this gave Johns an extra motivation to win, or whether the cards simply fell right we may never know, but it would be no surprise if Ankenman didn’t ask Raymer to support him any more.
For almost as soon as Raymer arrived Ankenman, who had been almost a 9:1 favourite, began to bleed chips. Indeed he doubled Johns up twice in a row, and almost in no time Johns had somehow secured the chip lead.
Johns then hit a straight on the turn to take a 4:1 chip lead, and won the tournament after he caught an ace on the river to give him two pairs: aces and twos. Ankenman mucked his hand and had to settle for second place.
Johns picked up $291,755 along with his first WSOP bracelet. Ankenman received $150,586 for second place.
