“High Stakes Poker” to film third season: Jamie Gold invited
If you haven’t yet managed to catch GSN’s High Stakes Poker then allow me to inform you that you are missing out on quite possibly the greatest poker show ever made. Now I feel I should add that I’m not prone to making those sorts of sweeping statements, but in the case of High Stakes Poker (HSP) I’m prepared to make an exception.

The format of HSP is very simple: a select group of the world’s finest poker players are invited to play with their own money in a high stakes cash game, to be filmed in the same way as the WPT and the WSOP. The minimum buy-in is $100,000 but there is no upper limit to. The game is No-Limit Texas Hold’em.

The game proved hard to resist and in the first season of HSP players such as Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Sam Farha, Phil Hellmuth, Gus Hansen, Jennifer Harman and Ted Forrest came out to play. There they played, in full view of those watching at home, the game they play for a living. Not just poker - cash game poker.

Along with the fascinating table talk that seems to feature exclusively in the cash game arena, the different strategies adopted by the players were also of great fascination. For example: while many players, like John Juanda for example, sat down with the minimum $100,000 buy-in, Daniel Negreanu decided to bring $1 million to the table. Planning to play fast and aggressive in order to intimidate the other players at the table Negreanu believed he needed a seriously deep stack.

His plan (from his point of view) was not an outright success but for the television audience it was a smash hit. Negreanu initially lost almost his entire $1 million stack before emerging from the rubble to build once more, ending the season just about even.

With aces against kings, full houses against quads, massive bluffs and regular $200,000+ pots the series is addictive viewing for poker fans. On pot between Negreanu and Hansen even topped $500,000 – I won’t spoil it by telling you who won. Meanwhile Phil Hellmuth and Mike Matusow provided the fireworks and everyone else provided a number of valuable poker lessons.

The third season is sure to be even more exciting with a host of new names invited to the table. One of those to receive the exclusive invite is the 2006 WSOP champion Jamie Gold, though even with an extra $12 million in his pocket it is not yet clear whether he will accept the invitation. Taping will begin in October at an as yet unchosen venue.
