Prison for Lehigh Bank Robber
A university student from Lehigh in Pennsylvania who robbed a bank in December 2005 to help pay off online gambling debts has been sentenced to ten years in prison. Gregory Horan Jnr. committed the robbery while two fraternity brothers waited in a car outside, oblivious to his actions.
The trial of Gregory Hogan has been one of contradictions and controversy. The son of a reverend Hogan was brought up in a solid stable family and had a bright college future ahead of him. But Hogan fell into gambling debts after losing thousands of dollars playing online poker and then resorted to the most drastic of actions. Amazingly, while he robbed the bank, his two fraternity friends waited for him in the car outside had no idea he was doing anything other than making a standard legitimate withdrawal.
By sentencing Hogan to ten years in prison Judge William H. Platt has reflected the view that gambling problems cannot be used to excuse illegal actions such as those taken by Hogan – ultimately, the judgement says, responsibility lies with the gambler, or poker player, to control his behaviour. Despite this however, Hogan is unlikely to serve more than 22 months in prison before he becomes eligible for parole.
