Jamie Gold given access to half his winnings
Jamie Gold, winner of the 2006 World Series of Poker and the biggest prize in the history of sport, will soon have access to half of the $12 million he won in the 2006 WSOP main-event.
According to Richard Schonfeld, attorney for Bruce Crispin Leyser, the plaintiff in the case against Jamie Gold, the U.S. District Court Judge in charge of the case is expected to sign an injunction in the very near future that freezes $6 million of Gold's tournament winnings, but allows him access to the remaining $6 million.
In one of the less savoury aspects surrounding an otherwise brilliant World Series, Jamie Gold is being sued by a man (Bruce Crispin Leyer) who claims the two had an arrangement that guaranteed half of anything Gold won should go to Leyser. The agreement was a result of work Leyer did in recruiting celebrities to play in the WSOP main-event whilst wearing sponsored gear.
Leyser's case rests upon a saved mobile phone message he received from Jamie Gold on the eve of the final table, in which Gold re-affirms the deal to give Leyser half of his winnings. If the message is proved to be genuine Gold will be left in an extremely tough position.
However in the weeks since the Leyser's writ was served Gold, in a number of interviews, has acknowledged Leyser's help in recuiting celebrities and tacitly acknowledged the existence of some sort of deal between the two. It therefore appears that the issue is not whether or not Leyser has a claim to some of the money, but exactly how much he can legitimately claim. Only time will tell.
