Magnus Petersson is first EPT champion of 2007
It was his first appearance on the European Poker Tour but it seems unlikely to be his last, after 29-year-old Magnus Petersson collected the €550,000 ($715,000) first prize and the title of Scandinavian Poker Open Champion in Copenhagen last weekend.

Petersson, a Swedish financial adviser, qualified for the tournament by playing in a PokerStars.com Saturday satellite, time he said he normally reserves for his girlfriend. But, in his own words: "She was away that day, luckily!"

Perhaps mindful of her accidental part in his triumph Petersson said afterwards that part of his winnings would be used to buy his girlfriend a new BMW.

Petersson's performance in Copenhagen was an impressive one, though as with most tournament wins it was graced by a slice of luck as well. In Petersson's case the most eye catching fortune came when he bluffed all-in with 7-2o and was called by A-K, but caught a two to win the pot with one pair.

But that hand couldn't diguise the fact that Petersson played solid poker throughout the tournament, especially on the final table and thoroughtly deserved his victory ahead of Betrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Richard Toth.

The German Open is the next EPT, which takes place in Dortmund, Germany on March 8th-11th. The event is likely to reach is capped limit of 500 players as 410 players are already registered.
