Negreanu makes seventh WPT final table
The World Poker Open in Tunica attracted a smaller field than most recent World Poker Tour events, with just 294 players paying the $10,000 buy-in, less than a third of the field that competed in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure earlier in January.
But though there may have been fewer players, there has been no less excitement, especially with Daniel Negreanu at the final table – the Canadian’s second WPT final table in a row. But not only is Kid Poker at the final table, he is also lying in second place, mainly thanks to seventh place finisher Robert Thompson who bluffed away all but $12,000 of his chips to Negreanu on the penultimate hand. Thompson will be kicking himself for moving all-in with K-Q on a board showing J-J-8-3, but for Negreanu, who held Q-J, it was Christmas and birthday all at once, and the $1.296 million pot sent Kid Poker soaring into second place, while leaving Thompson staring at the final table bubble; he was eliminated the very next hand.
The man in the best position to pick up the $913,986 first prize looks to be Young Cho, an Oklahoma native with less than $50,000 in tournament winnings to his name. He is guaranteed to win more than triple that tomorrow, but with $2.57 million in chips at the start of play he should be hoping to push for the title.
It won’t be an easy ride however, as this is one of the best WPT final tables of recent times. Standing in his way, besides Negreanu, will be Thang “Kido” Pham, who won the Bally’s WSOP Circuit event in 2005 and has over $1 million in tournament earnings to his name. And although he is shortstacked, J.C. Tran who begins the final table in sixth position, is one of the form players of the last year, and only just missed out on the 2006 Player of the Year. If he gets any chips together he will be a very real danger to the chip leaders.
The final table starts tomorrow at 5pm Central USA time. The chip counts are as follows:
Young Cho - $2.57 million
Daniel Negreanu - $1.296 million
Thang “Kido” Pham - $781,000
Bryan Sumner - $596,000
Gary Kainer - $514,000
J.C. Tran - $181,000
