Ivey and Antonius in massive heads-up battle on Full Tilt
Phil Ivey and Patrick Antonius, two of the modern era’s most brilliant poker players, went head-to-head last night in one of the most spectacular online poker sessions ever witnessed.
Both Ivey and Antonius are famous for playing (and usually winning) in the highest stakes poker games in the world, both online and live, and they are widely considered to be the most dangerous players in the modern game. Both have an incredible tournament record despite being primarily cash game specialists, something very few other players have been able to achieve. Last night they were to found online at Full Tilt Poker, playing heads-up in a $300-$600 No-Limit Texas Hold’em game, during which time they contested three pots of over $100,000. In the first big conflict a number of raises and re-raises saw both players all-in before the flop. Ivey showed As-As to Antonius’s Ks-Kh and when the board blanked out Ivey raked a $145,194 pot. Just a quarter-of-an-hour later and another gargantuan pot built up. In this hand Ivey opened the betting up to $1800 and his Finnish opponent raised to $5400. Ivey called and the flop came Jc-9d-8s, eliciting a $10,200 bet from Antonius which Ivey called. The turn was the 2s and Antonius quickly moved all-in for his remaining $48,899. Ivey called for a final time but lost when Antonius’s K-K held up against Ivey’s A-J. The river brought the Qs and Antonius raked the $128,997 pot. Amazingly only a few minutes had passed when the next titanic battle took place. As in previous hands the action kicked off with a raise to $1800, this time from Antonius. The usual pattern followed, with a re-raise to $5,400 from Ivey and a call from Antonius. The flop came 6s-5s-6h and Ivey bet out for $8400. Antonius now raised it up to $24,600, only for Ivey to re-raise to $64,600. A fleeting pause followed before Antonius pushed his last $91,797 into the pot, setting Phil Ivey all-in. He called. The turn and river were the Qh and the 3s and when the cards were on their backs it was Ivey who won, once again with pocket aces. Antonius had pocket jacks. Ivey raked the $193,778 pot, the biggest of the night.
