Paul Wasicka leads WPT LA Poker Classic
As Day Three of the WPT LA Poker Classic begins to wind down there is a familiar face at the head of the leaderboard. Paul Wasicka, runner-up to Jamie Gold in the 2006 WSOP main-event has shot up through the field, building his stack from $160,000 to roughly $900,000 to take the lead with just over 50 players remaining.
While Wasicka was moving swiftly up the leaderboard J.C. Tran, chip leader at the end of Day Two, was experiencing rather more mixed fortunes. He took a big hit to his stack in the early stages when Jacob Fernandez called his all-in bluff on the river, and then suffered again late in the day when his pocket tens failed to improve against Richard Munro’s pocket queens.
For lesser players two such big hits in one session could spell the end, but Tran was playing such good poker that despite these heavy hits he still had as many chips as he started with, and had dropped to only fifth on the leaderboard.
By and large it was a good day for those who started as chip leaders, with Bill Edler, Can Kim Hua, Mike Carsson, and Lee Markholt in particular making fine progress. But it was Paul Wasicka who made the most noise. He got off to a good start, eliminating Danny Smith early on when his K-K held up against Smith’s A-K, and he then continued to build momentum, gaining in confidence as the day went on.
Play was scheduled to stop when 54 players were left.
