World Poker Tour heads south for Spain

Tuesday’s disappointing news that the World Poker Tour had been forced to cancel its stop at the Grand Prix De Paris was offset somewhat today, when it was announced there would be an additional WPT stopover in Spain, scheduled for October this year.

The WPT has made a deal with Spain’s biggest casino operator “Grup Perlada” to film a major tournament in Spain’s Casino Barcelona, the same casino which hosts the World Heads-Up Poker Championships and the Spanish leg of the European Poker Tour.

It will be the first time the WPT has been to Spain, and represents a major coup for Spanish poker. The news is also particularly well timed for European Poker after Tuesday’s announcement of the cancellation of the Grand Prix De Paris due to pressure from the French gaming authorities. Apparently the WPT was refused permission to film the event, which takes place at the Aviation Club in Paris in a few weeks time.

With every EPT event of 2007 selling out its full capacity well before the start of each tournament, the Spanish WPT is bound to be huge, possibly one of the biggest poker tournaments ever staged in Europe.
