Critics trash latest poker film

Lucky You, the much hyped poker movie starring Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore, has been labelled a weak hand by film critics on the eve of its release.

The movie has spent the last 12 months collecting dust, but with Warner Bros readying its release for this weekend those critics lucky enough to see it have asked for it to be put back.

But before you phone to cancel your cinema tickets those of you who actually play poker might be interested in the detail of those reviews.

Brian Lowry of Variety said the film contains “too much card play”, while Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly says “this movie is about the joy of checks, calls, folds, rivers and the acquired thrill of knowing what those word mean.” So, basically it’s a film about poker!

The film, directed by Curtis Hanson, responsible for the much acclaimed L.A. Confidential, follows the story of a professional poker player Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) as he competes in the World Series of Poker. During the WSOP he finds love in the shape of Vegas lounge singer Bille Offer (Drew Barrymore), wisdom, money and an estranged father.

The movie features cameo’s from a number of real poker pros including Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Minh Ly, Mike Matusow, Daniel Negreanu and others.
